How long is the Perfect Poop Challenge?

The Perfect Poop Challenge runs for 90 days.

Are there any costs or fees to being in the study?

All the necessary supplies are covered free of charge during the pilot. This includes: 1 in-clinic enrollment visit, 2 AnimalBiome microbiome test kits, Hill's Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome dog food and access to 24/7 teleadvice from veterinary pros for the duration of the Challenge. If you submit the second stool sample and survey, you will receive an additional 90 days of teleadvice access after the completion of the Challenge.

Any veterinary visit, outside the enrollment visit, will not be covered by the Challenge and will be your financial responsibility.

Can I have more than 1 dog in the study?

In order to prevent confusion and ensure adequate data collection, we will only allow 1 dog per family to be enrolled in the study at this time.

App Download and Use

Do I need to download the app to participate in the Perfect Poop Challenge?

Yes! You will need to download the Perfect Poop app to participate in this challenge. Through the app,  you will connect with the veterinary pros through chat and video appointments, receive messages and surveys, and have access to curated content about your pup’s GI issues. Your results will be shared with you via video appointment through the app. 

How do I download the app?

You can download the Perfect Poop app from the App Store or Google Play. 

How do I log into the app?

Use the email you provided (where you got the welcome email) to access the app. When you enter your email, you will be sent a short access code via email. Enter that access code into the app. This way you never have to remember a password!

How do I schedule a video appointment with the veterinary care team?

When you open the Perfect Poop app, at the top of the screen you can select Video Visit or Live chat to connect with a veterinary professional. Once you select the type of consultation, you will need to select or add a pet, answer a few intake questions, and then pick an appointment time that works for you. You will receive an email and push notification reminder 15 mins before and 5 minutes before you will be sent your video access link.

How fresh does the poop sample need to be for analysis?

For dogs, we recommend collecting a sample as soon as your dog poops, picking it up in a bag, and bringing it to your sampling area right away. 

Do I need to discontinue supplements or medications before taking a poop sample for analysis?

When possible, we recommend discontinuing antibiotics and probiotics at least 24 hours before taking a poop sample for analysis.

My pet is having diarrhea. Can I still send a poop sample for analysis?

Yes. Our test has been carefully optimized to account for loose stool or diarrhea. When you collect the sample, try to cover as much of the swab tip as you can, and be sure to break off the swab tip and leave it inside the tube.

Will my pet's sample be safe in the mail?

The sample tubes included in the test kit contain a special preservative that keeps the bacteria in your pet’s sample well protected. We recommend sending the tube(s) soon after you collect a sample, but the sample will be safe during transit.

How long is the sample viable for?

We have completed studies that show samples are viable for at least 2 years once the sample is fixed in the liquid agent in the vial.

How large of a sample is needed?

A pea sized amount.

What time of the day is best to collect the sample?

Any time of the day is fine to collect.

How do I register my test kit?

To register your sample with AnimalBiome, please click on the “Register a Kit” on the top right corner of the home screen in the Perfect Poop app or visit perfect-poop-hills.animalbiome.com.You will need to sign in with the same email you use to access the app.

How long does it take to get test results?

Results are typically released within 10-14 days after the sample reaches the lab. 

How will I get my dog’s results?

TeleTails will reach out to you when your results are ready and ask you to schedule a video appointment. During your video appointment, a veterinary pro will explain your dog’s results to you. You will get a pdf copy via email once the video appointment is completed. 

What does the report contain?

The Gut Health Test report gives you the tools to understand your dog’s everyday digestive health. We analyze your dog’s stool sample and then compare your dog’s results with our healthy reference sample to see if your dog has a balanced microbiome. 

We specifically look to see if your dog has the variety of bacteria they should, if they are present in the correct numbers, and if there are any problematic bacteria found. We will also give you actionable recommendations based on your dog’s results. These reports will allow you to see how your dog’s microbiome has changed throughout the Challenge.  

Using DNA sequencing, we analyze the bacteria in the sample and compare it to our healthy dog reference set to determine if an imbalance is present. 
- Detects bacterial imbalances and identifies problematic groups 
- Actionable recommendations for personalized diet, supplement, or lifestyle changes to improve dog health 
- Allows you to see how the gut responds to dietary changes or treatments by retesting.
